In network marketing, residual income refers to money you receive from two sources:
This income repeats, month after month, year after year, as long as the customer retains the service. Business owners have found that the opportunity is a great way to supplement their income and help pay for some of the extras like family vacations, school tuition, a shopping trip or maybe even pay off some debt.
Musicians and insurance agents often make money through residual income. The insurance agent can receive residual income on a policy they sell a client, so long as the client renews and continues to pay on that policy.
Musicians can earn residuals for each stream of their song or paid download of their album. The musician/ACN Independent Business Owner comparison carries an interesting parallel:
What is the difference between becoming a one-hit wonder or legendary?
Some business opportunities promise huge income with minimal or little work. It sounds appealing - and also unrealistic! Top producers in network marketing worked hard on Day 1 right up to present day.
They put energy, time and effort into their business. That's how they build a platform for residual income.
TAKE ACTION | It starts with a commitment to become coachable. A willingness to trust in a system demonstrated to work. Often there’s momentum in that decision.
BUILD A BUSINESS | Talking to people everywhere to find customers and customer-getters doesn’t end. Some prospects you meet will be happy to buy services marketed by you. Others will want to build a business as they see you growing yours.
DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS | Most network marketing superstars don’t ever feel as if they’ve made it. They feel they can earn certain freedoms that they couldn’t achieve working a 9-to-5 job for someone else.
Did you enter the workforce with trade skills or a college degree? Or neither? The process usually looks the same. You punch a clock. You work a schedule. A boss sets your worth and salary, and you get take-home pay every couple of weeks.
To increase pay, you can earn a promotion. Work overtime. Or find a better-paying job. There are limits to that. In multi-level marketing, there are no limits. As you add customers and customer-getters who get more customers and customer-getters …
You give yourself a raise.
To make the most of your residual income prospects, you need these two things:
CUSTOMERS BUYING | With ACN, you market essential services. These include internet, mobile phone service and energy. Residual income starts with customers, each month they pay for each service marketed by you and purchased by them. Usually, they’re already paying someone for these services.
TEAM MARKETING | This is where the growth happens. Sometimes those customers want more of what you’re doing than what you’re marketing. When you add them to your team, you get residual income on their customers - and on those they add to their team.
Success in MLMs and with residual income isn’t guaranteed. It can become more rewarding with hustle and adherence to a plan. In ACN, you have plenty of mentors. They're in your upline. They're also speakers at International Training Events, PBRs and BOMs.
For more than 26 years, ACN has evolved in multi-level marketing. IBOs sell services essential to everyday living. They're services many people can’t live without! These include:
Often, IBOs start ACN with the thought of adding supplemental income. A little help with a bill, for a credit card or insurance payment. As residual income comes in, they can address those obligations. And not have to lean as much on their primary income.
That’s the first bit of freedom in multi-level marketing. It needn’t go further than that. If an IBO adds customers and members to their team, though, possibilities change, too. Top producers in ACN have made career changes as a result.
This ability to start your own business is rarely based on luck. The entrepreneurial landscape changes, and IBOs who adjust can see continued growth. Those at the top often still recruit in what’s known as Phase 1. It's a constant state of building business, not resting on laurels.
You often hear about IBOs who need ACN to work for them. There’s tremendous incentive in that. You’ll likely work harder for your own business than for someone else’s. In multi-level marketing, you have that opportunity to work for yourself - and be your own boss.
Not everyone finds success in ACN or other network marketing opportunities.
Those who join network marketing with thoughts of easy money are often disappointed. Beware of claims that promise you’ll work for a short time, and then never again. Success in an MLM comes with constant growth. You must remain coachable and hungry.
Remember these points as you consider joining ACN:
IT TAKES SOMEONE SPECIAL | Have achievements you’re proud of? Have you overcome obstacles? You have the grit often needed to succeed in network marketing. It’s not easy, but the method is straightforward - and momentum carries a huge boost in this business!
YOUR SCRIPT IS YOUR OWN | Your reason for joining ACN becomes your most influential selling point. Let customers and prospects know what you hope to achieve. People follow those with vision, not those with wealth.
YOUR PRODUCTS ARE ESSENTIAL SERVICES | There are no new widgets or costly services to sell customers on. Customers can pay bills for essential services and see a part of that money go to help feed kids in need.
Let’s say you start out as an IBO, and get 10 customers your first month. That’s 10 people who have signed up to receive services through ACN - some more than one service. Their recurring payments become your first residual income source.
What if two of those customers decide to become IBOs, too? Their success becomes your success, too - and more residual income.
To help them make the best of the opportunity, you’ll want them to do these things:
Residual income can become a life-changer. Those who build a strong team in ACN can begin to make life choices they’ve only dreamed of. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. Building a business takes hard work - but there’s potential for incredible reward, too.

Earnings as an ACN IBO are based solely on the successful sale of products to customers and their usage of those products. Individuals will incur expenses in operating their ACN business, such as the sign-up fee and renewal fee, as well as other possible operating expenses. As with any business, earnings and success at ACN are not guaranteed but depend primarily on the individual’s commitment, persistence and effort. Individuals may not earn income and may lose money as an IBO.
